2026 Marks 17 Years of Driving Change

Every great movement starts with a single observation. For SportAssist, it started in 2007 when co-founder Gerry St. Cyr noticed a young kid walking down a Langford road, hauling a heavy hockey bag.

The kid had the passion, the talent, and the grit—he just didn’t have the funds. He was restricted to the occasional drop-in session because league fees were entirely out of reach. That single conversation sparked a realization: far too many local kids were being forced to step away from the sports they loved, not because they lost their drive, but because of financial barriers.

Determined to change the game, Gerry and Kristin St. Cyr teamed up with Langford Mayor Stu Young, who immediately backed the vision with a seed donation. Just three months later, the very first SportAssist golf tournament launched right here at Bear Mountain, raising $20,000.

Just like that, SportAssist was born.

Fast forward to 2026, and SportAssist is proud to celebrate our 17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament! What started as a grassroots effort has evolved into one of the Western Communities’ most anticipated premier events, and our leading source of funding to keep local youth in the game.

We believe that organized sports aren’t a luxury—they are where kids learn teamwork, build resilience, find community, and thrive. To date, SportAssist has helped hundreds of local children continue playing the sports they love.
